Discover DUST 13: OOZE Architects & Urbanists

Updated: Jun 21

To complete the DUST partner team, we are thrilled to present OOZE Architects! Founded in 2003 in Rotterdam by Eva Pfannes and Sylvain Hartenberg, OOZE is an international organisation driving innovative solutions for today's complex challenges while envisioning alternative futures. With a mission of catalysing change, OOZE collaborates with a diverse array of partners, including governments, non-profits, academic institutions, and cultural organisations. Their projects span a variety of scales, from regional strategies to public space design and architecture.

OOZE is renowned for its unique ability to blend natural, ecological processes with cutting-edge technological expertise and deep insights into social-cultural behaviours within both built and natural environments. Their holistic approach seamlessly integrates water cycles, energy systems, and economic models, ensuring that both technical and socio-cultural dimensions are addressed.

Their vast portfolio features groundbreaking projects like the City of 1000 Tanks in Chennai, which aims to transform the city through innovative water management solutions. Another notable project is the Local Energy Action Plan (LEAP) for a Rotterdam neighbourhood, designed to develop inclusive energy solutions. Additionally, OOZE has conducted in-depth research on the inter-related water challenges and opportunities within the Elbe Water Basin, focusing on Hamburg City and the MK&H Museum.

In the DUST project, OOZE will harness its worldwide expertise to engage citizens in policymaking through innovative design methodologies. They will contribute to developing a framework to effectively use design-driven territorial and digital tools across various regional contexts within DUST. By identifying compelling narratives, OOZE aims to encourage proactive participation from marginalised and least-engaged communities in the co-creation of just transition policies.

OOZE will also anticipate and visualise alternative regional futures, employing regional design approaches that inspire and engage. Their role will centre on artistic direction, defining the visual languages, formats, and styles that bring the project's concepts to life, making them accessible and relatable to all stakeholders. By crafting these conceptual and visual frameworks, OOZE will make the vision of a just transition comprehensible and inspiring for everyone involved.

Beyond offering recommendations, OOZE will explore and translate innovative ideas into visual representations and storylines that resonate deeply with communities. Their focus will be on transforming data-driven insights into engaging, human-centric narratives that foster immersive participation and deeper connections. By forming and visualising processes and narratives, OOZE aims to shift the project's outputs from abstract data to relatable human experiences, thereby facilitating community participation in the co-creation of just transition policies.

In the words of OOZE, “it is crucial to address our current reality with an interlinked and integrated process approach. Increasing complexity and fragmented communities should be reconnected to a new hopeful future. Let’s find the pathway to achieve a fair transition with the people, for the people!”. We’re looking forward to seeing how this continues to take shape in the DUST project.
