WHAT'S NEW IN GOTLAND?
Sweden's largest island, Gotland, is also of the main cement producer of the country.
Since the industrial revolution, limestone mining in Gotland has supported the economic prosperity of the region. Limestone is mostly used in the cement industry and today island mines supply 75% of Sweden's cement usage.
Gotland's cement production is responsible for about 3% of all of Sweden’s carbon footprint. Ceased production would result in negative consequences for infrastructure projects and the building sector, and also the region's economy and employment.
Gotland's cement industry needs to transition towards less polluting processes, with fuels substitution, new cement grades and different materials in the production. The Just Transition Fund supports this conversion.
